and Strong

The MSU-Hurley Children’s Hospital Pediatric Public Health Initiative’s Nutrition team is dedicated to improving pediatric nutrition through programs that enhance nutrition access, education, and consumption of healthy foods.

The Fruit and Vegetable

Prescription Program

The Fruit and Vegetable Prescription Program expands access to fresh fruits and vegetables in Genesee County. Every child, from birth to 19 years old, and every prenatal patient, receives one $15 prescription for fresh produce at every eligible visit to a participating pediatric or prenatal clinic. Prescriptions can be filled at Flint Farmers’ Market or Flint Fresh, directly supporting local farmers, or at select Meijer grocery stores.

In 2015, Hurley Children’s Center, a large pediatric clinic in Flint, relocated to the second floor of the Flint Farmers’ Market. Recognizing the opportunity to link child health care and healthy, locally grown food, the Fruit and Vegetable Prescription Program, Michigan’s first fruit and vegetable prescription program for kids, was introduced at Hurley Children’s Center in February 2016.

Prescription Value Increased

All children aged 6 months and older received a $5 prescription for fresh fruits and vegetables at every well visit. After seeing their pediatrician, kids could shop downstairs at the Flint Farmers’ Market for fresh produce. The value of prescriptions increased to $10 in May 2016 and then to the current $15 value in January 2018. Additional funding also allowed pediatricians to distribute prescriptions to children from birth to 18 years old at all clinic visits in November 2016.

The Fruit and Vegetable Prescription Program encouraged families to purchase more fresh produce, but families shared that their children often did not have the culinary knowledge or skills to prepare and eat the fruits and vegetables. In response, the PPHI Nutrition Team developed and launched Flint Kids Cook, a free cooking and nutrition class for kids, in October 2017. PPHI Nutrition Director Dr. Amy Saxe-Custack partnered with Chef Sean Gartland to create a class curriculum with simple, kid-friendly recipes that featured a variety of fruits and vegetables and nutrition education that focused on the importance of eating healthy food.
